SEGMENT 1

How old does the student have to be in order to enroll in a Segment 1 course?

Students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class in order to attend.

What is Segment One?

Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours on-the-road instruction, and 4 hours of observation. If you are under the age of 18 you are required to take Segment I by the State of Michigan in order to receive a Level 1 Learner's License.

What materials do students need to bring to the first day of Segment 1?

  • Notebook and pen/pencil

  • Glasses (if applicable)

  • Birth Certificate (or identifying documents)

Can I drive after segment one?

You can obtain a level one learners license from the secretary of state upon the successful completion of a segment one course after picking up a certificate. A level one license allows you to drive with a licensed adult in the passenger seat.

How quickly do classes fill up?

Classes fill up many months in advance. Our summer classes are the most popular we recommend registration as early as possible. 

What happens if I miss a class?

We understand that schedules are busy and you may need to miss time during the course. We strongly advise you not to miss any days. Any classtime missed must be made up in future sessions prior to certification. For example, if you miss day five, you must make up day five in the next course you only get one chance at a make up session. As there is a six week maximum time to complete your segment one course.

 

If you missed the first two days of class, we recommend you move your session to a future one. As the first two days are critical to understanding how everything is run.

SEGMENT 2

What are the requirements for a student to enroll in a Segment 2 course?

Students must possess a valid Level 1 Learner's License for a minimum of 3 months and have completed at least 30 hours of on-the-road driving with parents. At least 2 of the 30 hours must be night time driving.

 

What is Segment 2?

Segment two consists of 6 hours of classroom instruction. The course will discuss defensive driving, drinking and driving, road rage, and will help to prepare the student for their Road Test. If you are under the age of 18 you are required to take Segment Two by the State of Michigan in order to be eligible for a Road Test.

 

What materials do students need to bring to the first day of Segment two?

  • Level 1 Learner's License

  • Driving Log showing 30 hours

  • Notebook, pen & pencil

What if I took Segment I at a different driving school?

Everyone is eligible to take Segment two from 5 Star diving school regardless of where Segment 1 was taken.

General

How long will the Driver's Training process take?

Students under the age of 18 are required by the State of Michigan to take both Segment 1, Segment 2, and a Road Test. The entire process will take 7 or more months to complete.

What if school is cancelled due to inclement weather?

In the case of inclement weather, we kindly ask that you contact our Main Office to inquire about the status of your education class. Cancellations are determined on an individual basis, you will be notified by your instructor if your class or drive is canceled. 

What type of vehicles do you use?

Our vehicles are all midsize, four-door, vehicles which receive regular maintenance. The vehicles are equipped with an instructor brake pedal and rearview mirror.

Do you offer adult oriented courses?

Classroom sessions are not available for adults. Driving lessons are available for adults (18 and older) who have a current Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), with pick up and drop off at home available.
